b. 1973, East Orange, NJ.
A collagist, a painter, a sculptor, a performer, Brian Belott creates multi-media artworks across a range of artistic genres, his prolificacy spurred on by a desire to revive undervalued practices of art making: ‘I’m very reactionary’, he has said, ‘I’m always looking for the ignored thing, the underdog’. Seeking to ‘breathe new life’ into the familiar, Belott regularly incorporates found objects – socks, plastic combs, children’s’ books – into his playful, bracingly naïve works; the effect is to weave new narratives from our collective experiences, embracing innovation and exploding tradition in the process.
