Producing large-scale photographs through labor-intensive processes recalling the 19th century origins of photography usually incorporating the physical matter of the subject itself, Matthew Brandt was strongly inspired by classical American landscape photographs. Travelling through the West, the artist photographs and collects material samples from nature and cities, immersing himself in the alchemy of image making and posing a fundamental question about his medium: what is a photograph?
