Rudolf Stingel has continually explored the medium of painting over three decades of his career, embracing abstraction, figuration and photorealism in a myriad of ways. Known for his immersive installations, Stingel involves painting as a self-reflexive metaphor for perception and memory, whilst harbouring a dialectic between the painted subject and painting as subject. His artistic output is prolific and visually diverse, yet meticulous and generous in its offering. Stingel has participated in the 1999, 2003, and 2013 Venice Biennales, and was the subject of a mid-career retrospective at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York in 2007.
