Theaster Gates is an American artist and also a professor in the Department of Visual Arts at the University of Chicago. His practice includes sculpture, performance, installation and urban interventions that aim to bridge the gap between art and life. The artist is also committed to instigate the creation of cultural communities by acting as catalysts for social engagement that leads to political and spatial change. His work can be found in the collection of several museums around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
